Transferring to Atsugi - train-train-bento-train

We then headed for the train station and planned to take the Narita Express line from the Narita Airport to Shinjuku. We got a bit confused due to the seat reservation system. It costs extra to reserve seats in addition to the fare for the train. So, we accidentally only purchased the seats without purchasing the fare. After we figured that out, we passed through the gates (like BART). The cost was 3,380 yen. The ride to Shinjuku left at 5:13pm exactly and arrived at 6:41pm exactly. No kidding. These trains run on time. At the Shinjuku station, we purchased reserved seats and fare on the express train to Machida on the Odakyu train line (run by another company). It cost 400 Yen to reserve a seat and 380 Yen for the fare. Before boarding the train, we purchased some obento to eat on the train. Yummy! iI can see why the Japanese eat on the run. The train rides are just long enough to have a meal, and it seems to take so long to go such a short distance that you don't have time to eat anytime else. That train left exactly at 7pm, and we arrived at Machida at 7:40pm. At 7:45pm we boarded the local train from Machida to Zama where Todd's house is. On the local train, Todd pointed out how quiet it was. Talking on your cell phone is prohibited in the train, and people just don't talk to each other on the train apparently. Todd and I were the only ones chatting. I did see more than half of the people text messaging on their phones, though. That was pretty incredible. Everyone texting on their phone but not talking. That's so Japanese! Don't disturb the common area yet be totally productive. When we arrived at Todd's station, we walked up and down a few flights of stairs and walked about 5 minutes in the rain to his house. For Japan, this house is huge. Heck, it's big for the Silicon Valley! It would probably cost $500k in our area. Two bedrooms upstairs, a den and living room downstairs. It's a very nice place that doesn't feel crowded at all.
